Dress Up Time!!


OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2012  Kdg 1 Hummingbirds
Transdisciplinary theme – Where we are in place and time.  DRESS UP TIME! 

Central Idea:   ‘Clothes can reflect who we are, where we live and what we do.’

An inquiry into:         * How the clothes we wear can reflect our culture
* How weather affects what we wear
* How work and play affects what we wear
Key concepts:  function and causation
Attitudes:  curiosity, appreciation and tolerance
SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES: 5 weeks
 October 29 to Nov 16  -1.What clothes do people from different cultures wear? (3weeks)
Tuning in:  Why do we wear clothes?
Why do some people wear different clothes?      
 -    Children are asked to bring clothes from different cultures to contribute to our dress-up corner. (Shoes, hats, bags, dress, Thai sarong, Thai shirt, Lanna clothes).

Children bring photos of their family or friends in traditional dress or winter or summer clothes.
Looking at the dress/clothing of other peoples and cultures.
Dressing ourselves in different cultures clothing on a paper body.
What kinds of clothes do (I) wear?   Describe your clothes
Do you choose your own clothes each day?
How do different types of clothes make you feel? …….
The right size, comfortable, beautiful, cool, smart.
Naming clothes – new vocabulary –  
Decorate our own T/shirt to wear at Christmas concert 21/12/12

November 19 to Nov 23         
 2. How do we dress for where we live?  (1 week)
Looking at the clothes that people wear for different weather conditions and why?  
 Looking at the clothes / uniforms that people wear for where they live
Looking at different fabrics     
Recognizing different fabrics and when and why we wear them.                      
What fabrics do we need for where we live?
Hot/cold - trying on clothes of hot and cold fabrics.
Rough/soft – trying on clothes of rough and soft fabrics.
Loy Krathong celebrations

 November 26 to Nov 30
 3. How do people dress for what they do?  
 (1 week)
Looking at the clothes / uniforms that people wear for different jobs and professions and why? 
Visit from Doctor, Nurse, Policeman, Sportsman, Pilot.
-    Looking at different fabrics.
What fabrics do we need for different jobs?
Looking at clothes that people wear for different sports or activities and why?  
 Closure
Assessment:  Matching clothes to weather rubric.

Assessment:  Photo of children dressed in clothes from a different culture.  Children will describe what culture they are dressed in and where they might be going.
