Who am I?


AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2012    Kdg 1 Hummingbirds    
Our first Unit Of Inquiry for the 1st term 2012 – 2013 will be
Transdisciplinary Theme:  ‘WHO WE ARE?’  Unit Title:  WHO AM I?
Central Idea:  “Everyday I learn more about who I am, what I can do and how I feel..”
An inquiry into: 
My body and what I look like
What I can do  
My feelings, likes and dislikes      Form, Function and Reflection are the key concepts

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES:

August 27th to Sept. 14th  - 1. What are my body parts and what do I look like? 
(3 weeks)
Tuning in:    Using the inquiry donut model:  Things I know, Things I want to know and Ways to find out.
Looking at ourselves & our friends in mirrors – What colour are our eyes, our hair, type of hair?  In what ways am I like others in my family/class?
Pre unit assessment:  Draw our faces
- Eye colour graph- Colour hair
- How many eyes, nose, ears, arms, heads, and legs do we have?
- Place eyes nose etc on face. 
- Make a face with different shapes oval, circle, triangle, square, rectangle.
- Puppet of ourselves
My family
            Mother, father, brother sisters, my pets – Family Graph
My country
            Where is my country on the map? Picture of my country, the weather
My house
            What is my house like? Kitchen, living room, bed room, bathroom, garden
My birthday
            How old am I? How do we celebrate a birthday?
- All About Me Book – draw ourselves, hands and feet.  (Ongoing activity all year.)

September 17th to 28th   2.  How can I use my body?  (2 weeks)

   -   Our 5 Senses
-         Draw (line, circle, square, rectangle, triangle)
-         Cut (cut what we like in a catalogue)
-         Color, paint, glue (color, cut and glue our favorite shape and our favorite color)
-         Speak (Thai, English,….in how many languages can we say hello, bye and thanks)
-         Sing
-         Dance
-         PE
o        Walk, run, jump, pedal, swim, swing, slide, catch a ball
o        How long can I stay on one foot?
-         Tell us the things you can do chart.
-         Show us what you can do.  Dress selves for swimming, change our clothes, put away our belongings, hang up our towel, pack away blanket, pillow. 
-         Following the classroom routine.
-         Wearing PE shoes on Mondays.

October 1st - October 12th  -  3. What do I like and not like? (dislike)
4. How do I feel and how and how do I show my feelings?  (10 days)
Does everyone like/dislike the same things?
      -    What things do I like and dislike chart.
-         What kind of food do I like? Is it healthy food?
-         What kind of games do I like?
-         What is my favorite corner in the class and what I like to do there.
-         My favorite color
-         Drawing happy and sad faces and why.  What makes me happy and sad?
-         Other feelings – scared, surprised, lonely, angry, confused
-         How do I show these feelings and when do I show these feelings?

October 15th – October 19th - Reflect on Unit – what have we learned about ourselves. 
-  Assessment – From a picture write a journal page describing yourself, what you were doing and how you were feeling.
